In his speech at the Labour Party Conference, Keir Starmer said he wanted to level with people about trade-offs, one of them being the need for new overground pylons to lower electricity prices. But is this trade-off really necessary?
Undoubtedly we need to move the clean, homegrown power from Britain’s renewables to the homes and businesses that need it. But pylons, power lines, and substations can face vocal opposition from local campaigners who would prefer it to be built underground, offshore, or not at all.
But what are the real costs of choosing alternative ways to transmit power? Could mandating electricity bill discounts and community funds to compensate communities who host new transmission infrastructure help speed up the rollout? And are there ways to reduce the need for new pylons?
