Bring back the beaver! Politicians say furry river creatures hunted to extinction should be reintroduced across England to defend farmland from flooding

Kitty Thompson, senior nature programme manager at the Conservative Environment Network, said: 'The time for trials is over. The evidence is clear. We need wild beaver releases in water courses across England if we are to reduce the number of flooding events in an environmentally and financially sustainable way.

'We need a wild beaver licensing regime that enables communities that want and need these native ecosystem engineers to get them and start reaping the benefits they bring.

'Underpinned by sensible management plans that enable landowners to keep the population under control, farmers should be rewarded for their support of reintroduction efforts and for protecting beaver habitats and dams that are established on their land.'
