Location: Buckinghamshire
Purpose: The government provided a grant for local authorities to improve the delivery of their statutory air quality duties. As Buckinghamshire has several air quality management areas in place, it received funding to electrify its refuse fleet to reduce residents’ exposure to nitrogen dioxide pollution.
Description: The council used central government funding (secured under the Conservatives) to retrofit a refuse vehicle to electric, which it had previously been unable to afford. The electric refuse vehicle cut air pollution on one of the most polluted routes and gave the council a blueprint for future heavy vehicle conversions.
Funding: The council received £578,000 from the then-Conservative government’s air quality grant
Conservative councillor/ council lead: Cllr Martin Tett, Leader of Buckinghamshire Council
