Environmental Leadership Hustings

Today we hosted an Environmental Leadership Hustings for Conservative Environment Network supporters and councillors with Environment Secretary George Eustice, who is supporting Rishi Sunak, and International Environment Minister Lord Goldsmith, who is supporting Liz Truss.

The next leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister will inherit an ambitious environmental agenda from their predecessors. Both have already committed to bold targets to achieve net zero by 2050 and halt the decline of nature by 2030. One of their first tasks in Number 10 will be implementing their plan ahead of winter to help lower household bills and strengthen our energy security.

They will face a number of other imminent decisions, from how to respond to public concern about river pollution and what to push for at the global biodiversity summit in Montreal, to how to reform EU regulation and drive economic growth in environmentally-friendly ways.

George Eustice and Zac Goldsmith answered questions from CEN councillors and supporters about how their preferred leadership candidates will respond to these challenges and take the UK's environmental action forward.
