Environmental leadership is not a distraction from core Conservative values, but a natural extension of them

The Conservative Party has elected Kemi Badenoch as its new leader, and one thing is clear: a strong, innovative plan for the environment must be at the forefront of her agenda.

This isn't just about responding to the pressures of the moment. It's about seizing an opportunity to lead on an issue that is inherently conservative - protecting our country’s natural legacy, ensuring economic stability and preserving our way of life for future generations.

We cannot just adopt the left-wing, statist approach that we know doesn’t work. We must champion an ambitious, conservative to protect our natural inheritance, get the UK economy growing, appeal to younger voters like me and boost our international reputation.

For too long, environmental issues have been seen as the realm of the opposition, yet conservatism is rooted in the principle of control - of looking after what we have for those who come after us. Climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental humiliation threaten the very foundations of our communities. Floods, extreme weather events and polluted cities are not hypothetical concerns; they affect jobs, homes and health. Having a pragmatic, long-term plan for environmental action put in place, is a matter of common sense. As an example the world leading carbon capture facility on Teesside, aiming to capture up to 95% of its emissions & power 1.3 million homes, helps align with conservative values of wisdom, responsibility and lifelong planning.

A powerful environmental plan can also serve as a catalyst for economic restoration. The new Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has the chance to advocate for a green economy that is not only environmentally sustainable but also economically dynamic. The UK has already demonstrated leadership in renewable energy, with industries like offshore wind creating thousands of high-quality jobs. By expanding our focus to include clean technologies, energy efficiency and sustainable agriculture, we can align the UK as a global leader in green innovation and reap the economic benefits across the country.

This is not about surrendering economic growth for environmental unity; it's about recognising that the two must go hand in hand. Investing in green infrastructure and low-carbon industries will drive economic power and ensure the UK remains competitive on the global platform.

Furthermore, environmental action offers the Conservative Party a unique opportunity to engage younger voters. The environment is an utmost concern for younger generations who are increasingly looking for leaders to willing take meaningful action on climate change. By putting forth a trustworthy, ambitious plan, the new Conservative leader can bridge generational divides and show that the party is forward-looking and responsive to the challenges of our time. This is not about acquiring the language of other parties but about articulating a distinctly conservative vision for a sustainable future, one that values innovation, enterprise and individual responsibility.

On the international front, a strong environmental stance would also magnify the UK's reputation. As one of the first industrialised nations, the UK has a responsibility and a unique opportunity - to lead global efforts against climate change. By committing to valiant environmental policies, the next Conservative leader can showcase the UK as a lighthouse of responsible, effective governance.

The new Conservative leader must recognise that environmental leadership is not a distraction from core Conservative values, but a natural extension of them. It's about protecting our economy, our communities and our world. By prioritising a strong environmental agenda, the Conservative Party can ensure a thriving, sustainable future—true to its principles and responsive to the needs of both today and tomorrow.

In conclusion, environmental leadership presents Kemi Badenoch with a powerful opportunity to protect our natural heritage, strengthen the economy and connect with future generations. By advancing a strong, conservative vision for sustainability, the party can reinforce its core values while ensuring a thriving and resilient future for the UK.
