Norfolk County Council and Great Yarmouth Borough Council: Reusable cup scheme

  • Purpose: In response to feedback from the community that on-street litter bins were overflowing, combined with the council’s own insights about an increased intake of takeaway packaging since the pandemic, the council embarked on this project to reduce litter and the use of single-use plastic packaging locally. By focusing on reusable packaging, rather than just the recycling of single-use packaging, this project is adhering to the priorities reflected in the waste hierarchy of sustainable resource management.

  • Description: The council has partnered with nine local businesses (and counting) to roll out a reusable cup scheme. Customers pay a £2 deposit for the reusable cup when buying a hot beverage from these local businesses. This deposit is retrieved once the cup is returned to any one of the participating businesses. The bright blue reusable cups are emblazoned with “Hemsby Cup”, the name of the scheme, and are able to be used over 1000 times before needing to be replaced.

  • Conservative councillor/council lead: Cllr Kay Mason Billig, leader

  • Funding: Interreg 2Seas project funded by the European Regional Development Fund
