Location: Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London
Purpose: Concern about road safety is a common reason why many adults and children do not want to cycle regularly. RBKC is also concerned about the impact that poor air quality, social isolation, and obesity is having on its residents. So in conjunction with its ‘school streets’ programme, the council has provided lessons and a cycling club so that children and adults from across the borough can learn to cycle or improve their road safety awareness and confidence.
Description: The council provided 1,500 lessons for children and adults living and working in the borough. The lessons helped the riders to improve their road safety awareness and their confidence on the road. The council also created an ‘all ability club’ which is free to use. The club is run by the social enterprise ‘Bikeworks’ and teaches bikeability courses, which cover everything from the basics to safe and confident cycling. Not only is the club a social opportunity for residents but they also provide bikes, tandems, wheelchairs, handcycles, and more, so residents of all ages and abilities can build up their confidence on the bike. Bikeworks also provides other services like cargo cycle training, e-bike training, a delivery service, bike maintenance courses, and mechanics.
Conservative councillor/ council lead: Councillor Cem Kemahli, Cabinet Member for Planning and Public Realm, and Councillor Johnny Thalassites, Finance, Customer Services and Net Zero Council.
