Suffolk County Council: Suffolk Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan

  • Location: Ipswich, Suffolk

  • Purpose: The council wants to encourage walking and cycling to ease congestion, reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and improve resident’s health and wellbeing.

  • Description: The council formed a Cycling Policy Development Panel in 2019 which included councillors and representatives from a number of cycle advocacy and public health groups (e.g. Sustrans and Public Health England), which then identified and consulted on several potential cycle schemes across the county. Following a successful bid into the government’s active travel funding pot, Suffolk County Council has delivered additional cycle lanes, bike storage, new modal filters, and repair workshops. The new cycle paths adhere to the policies set out in the Gear Change Report (e.g. segregated cycle paths).

  • Funding: The Department Transport’s Active Travel Fund which allocated Suffolk £3,918,947.

  • Conservative councillor/ council lead: Suffolk County Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance and Environment Richard Rout and Suffolk County Council Cabinet Member for Equalities and Communities, Bobby Bennett.
