Tees Valley Combined Authority: Tees Valley multi-modal hydrogen transport hub

  • Location: Tees Valley

  • Purpose: To reach net zero by 2050, heavy transport will need to switch to more environmentally friendly energy sources. The Hydrogen Transport Hub will gather evidence for the Department for Transport’s long term strategy on hydrogen for transport, with the ambition to make the UK a world leader in the industry.

  • Description: The Hydrogen Hub will be a set of facilities for the production, storage, and distribution of green hydrogen. It will underpin the research and development for rolling out green hydrogen for all transport modes (e.g. for supermarket deliveries and online retailers) and what role hydrogen will play in the clean energy transition.

  • Funding: £3 million was provided by national government

  • Conservative councillor/ council lead: Mayor of Tees Valley, Ben Houchen, then Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps and Tees Valley Combined Authority Technology And Innovation Officer, Mark Lewis.
